Male Army AGSU Uniform Setup: Complete Guide

Male Army AGSU Uniform Setup: Complete Guide

Oct 23rd 2026

Setting up a male Army AGSU uniform can be confusing when older ASU rules appear online. Rank, ribbons, badges, and other insignia have specific placement requirements that vary by uniform configuration.

This guide explains the current requirements for male Army AGSU uniforms. It covers Class A, Class B, Tropical Dress, insignia, awards, headgear, and common setup mistakes. The guidance reflects current Army policy, including Army Directive 2025-18.

Male Army AGSU Uniform Components

The Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) is the Army's service uniform and replaces the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU) for general wear.

The Army requires all Soldiers to wear the AGSU beginning October 1, 2027, after which the blue ASU becomes an optional formal and ceremonial uniform.

A male AGSU includes:

  • Heritage green uniform coat
  • Heritage taupe trousers
  • Heritage tan shirt
  • Heritage green necktie
  • Heritage walnut belt and brass buckle
  • Authorized headgear
  • Heritage walnut socks
  • Walnut brown shoes
  • Authorized insignia, ribbons, badges, and awards

The Army recognizes Class A, Class B, and the Tropical Dress variation. Class A includes the service uniform coat. Class B does not include the coat, while Tropical Dress is a Class B configuration with ribbons for hot-weather wear.

Male AGSU Uniform Setup and Wear Requirements

Start with the basic uniform before adding insignia. Proper fit, alignment, and a clean crease create the professional appearance expected of a military uniform. Army Regulation 670-1 provides the foundation for proper uniform wear.

AGSU Coat And Trousers

The AGSU coat is worn with heritage taupe trousers and a heritage tan shirt. Male Soldiers can wear either a short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirt, depending on the authorized uniform configuration.

Heritage Tan Shirt

The heritage tan shirt comes in short- and long-sleeved configurations. The correct shirt depends on the uniform variation and applicable wear requirements.

Enlisted Soldiers can choose the appropriate male enlisted AGSU long-sleeve shirt or male enlisted short-sleeve shirt. Officers wear the shirt configuration authorized for their status, including Glendale's male officer AGSU shirts.

Heritage Walnut Belt

The heritage walnut belt is paired with an oxidized brass buckle. For male Soldiers, the Army states the tip passes to the wearer's left and should not exceed 1-1/2" past the first belt loop.

Heritage Green Necktie

The heritage green necktie is required with the Class A AGSU. With Class B, the tie is optional when wearing the short-sleeved shirt but required with the long-sleeved shirt.

Tie Placement

The heritage green four-in-hand necktie is worn with Class A. With Class B and Tropical Dress, the tie is optional with the short-sleeved shirt but required with the long-sleeved shirt.

When worn, the tie must be at least 2 inches above the top of the buckle. It must not extend past the bottom of the buckle. Authorized knots include the four-in-hand, Windsor, and half-Windsor.

Dress Shoes

Male Soldiers wear walnut brown Oxford shoes with the AGSU. Brown combat boots are not a substitute for the prescribed dress footwear.

Male AGSU Rank and Branch Insignia Placement

Rank and branch insignia differ between enlisted personnel and officers. The correct grade insignia is worn according to the Soldier's rank and status.

Enlisted Rank Insignia

Enlisted grade insignia is centered on the sleeve and positioned evenly between the top of the shoulder and the elbow.

When an authorized shoulder sleeve insignia or tab is present, follow the current AGSU wear guidance for the placement of each item. Keep the grade insignia centered between the shoulder and elbow, rather than repositioning it based on older ASU diagrams.

Officer Rank Insignia

Officers wear nonsubdued oxidized silver grade insignia on the AGSU coat's shoulder loops. The insignia is positioned 5/8 inch from the outside shoulder seam and centered front to back.

The officer and enlisted rank configurations are therefore not interchangeable.

Branch Insignia

Male enlisted Soldiers wear the U.S. insignia on the right collar and their authorized branch insignia on the left collar. The insignia must be positioned according to the current AGSU wear and appearance guidance.

Male officers wear the U.S. insignia and branch insignia on the AGSU coat as prescribed for officer collar and lapel insignia. Officer placement differs from enlisted placement, so Soldiers should follow the applicable current Army guidance for their rank and branch.

AGSU Ribbons, Badges, and Unit Award Placement

Awards and insignia must follow their authorized order of precedence. Placement also changes between Class A and Class B configurations.

Ribbons And Unit Awards

On the AGSU coat, ribbons are centered 1/8 inch above the left breast pocket. The ribbon mount remains centered even when the top row is offset.

Unit awards are centered above the right breast pocket. The bottom edge of the emblem sits 1/8 inch above the pocket flap. The RDI is worn above the right pocket flap according to the applicable configuration.

Combat And Special Skill Badges

Class A allows more combat and special skill badge combinations than Class B. Class A may wear up to three authorized badges above the ribbons when the applicable group and precedence rules permit.

When you wear two authorized badges on the same left pocket flap, space them equally. Their upper portions sit approximately 1/8 inch below the top of the pocket, with at least 1 inch between the badges.

Identification Badges

For the AGSU Class A coat, place one authorized identification badge on each pocket. Position the badge midway between the lower edge of the pocket flap and the bottom edge of the pocket.

Identification badges are not permitted with the Class B or Tropical Dress configuration.

Male AGSU Nameplate Placement

The nameplate is required on the AGSU coat, short- and long-sleeved shirts, Ike jacket, and heritage 564 pullover. Do not wear it on the AGSU leather jacket or windbreaker.

For male Soldiers, center the nameplate left to right on the right breast pocket flap. Center it between the top of the button and the top of the pocket. This requirement applies to the coat, shirts, and Ike jacket.

AGSU Class A vs. Class B Uniform Requirements

The main difference is the coat, but the authorized insignia and accouterments also differ.

Class B Soldiers may wear authorized insignia and accouterments unless their commander directs otherwise.

When worn, the applicable insignia follows the current AGSU Class B or Tropical Dress placement rules. Army Directive 2025-18 provides current guidance for these configurations and their authorized accouterments.

Authorized Male AGSU Headgear

The Army authorizes the green garrison cap with the AGSU. The heritage green service cap is also optional AGSU headgear. The black beret is not authorized with any AGSU variation.

For the garrison cap, officers wear nonsubdued grade insignia centered on the left curtain, 1 inch from the front crease. Enlisted Soldiers wear their DUI in the same general location, centered on the left curtain, 1 inch from the front crease.

Common Male AGSU Setup Mistakes

Common mistakes include:

  • Using old blue ASU placement instructions
  • Mixing Class A and Class B requirements
  • Applying officer rules to enlisted personnel
  • Using outdated SSI terminology
  • Misplacing the shoulder sleeve insignia
  • Wearing unauthorized badges or tabs
  • Forgetting the required Class B nameplate
  • Using the wrong ribbon limit
  • Wearing identification badges on Class B
  • Treating an Ike jacket as interchangeable with Class A
  • Wearing a black beret with the AGSU
  • Relying on outdated boot guidance

The AGSU draws inspiration from earlier Army uniforms, but that does not make older ASU placement rules applicable. Always check the current Army guidance for the configuration being worn.

AGSU Replacement Items

Once the configuration is established, identify the exact component you need. Common replacement categories include coats, trousers, shirts, belts, buckles, neckties, rank insignia, ribbon mounts, badges, nameplates, shoulder insignia, headgear, and footwear.

Conclusion

A correct male Army AGSU uniform setup depends on more than having the right uniform pieces. Proper placement of rank, ribbons, badges, insignia, and the nameplate helps ensure the uniform follows current Army requirements.

Before an inspection or formal event, review your configuration against Army Directive 2025-18 and applicable Army uniform guidance. Check each item carefully, especially when using older AGSU or ASU diagrams.
